i opened this chest up to find it packed full of clothes and material. i started bagging the things up and the further down i got the more things i was finding hide inside. the button and thread kit issued to my grandfather during world war II. the miniature bible he was issued before he shipped out. a silk screen painting of someone I've never seen before. my moms wedding dress from when she married my dad that she had hand made. then i came across my grandmothers diary. it was from the years 1941 to 1943.
thumbing through it just to see what life was like around here i came across her talking about my grandfather. i think i found where my romantic side came from. he was on leave from basic training evidently. everyday for weeks she wrote how he would come over to her house. or would walk her home from church. they went to the movie theater and to an ice cream shop. he even came over and help her and her mother cook for the family. then i came across a day where she had written, "raybon walked me home and asked me a question. i wonder what it could be? what fun we had. I'm so happy." this apparently was when he proposed.
two days later she wrote that he and two of her brothers had left to go back to Chicago and how sad everyone was. i stopped reading it there. it was sad to think that almost every male that age was leaving for a reason. luckily my grandfather and both uncles made it back safe. this was a nice thing to find and would have never even known it was there if i had not decided to do something nice for someone when i didn't have to. i guess there is a such thing as karma. like the old saying you get more with honey than vinegar.
